Is A Dog's Way Home a Sequel to A Dog's Purpose?

Research shows a connection between kids' healthy self-esteem and positive portrayals in media. That's why we've added a new "Diverse Representations" section to our reviews that will be rolling out on an ongoing basis. You can help us help kids by suggesting a diversity update.

The theme of veterans suffering from mental illness works in the context of service dogs, but Axel's situation seems a bit heavy for what's otherwise clearly a family-targeted film. There's a brief moment of happiness when Bella temporarily lives with a kind married couple who want to adopt her. She's tempted, but her heart belongs at home, with Lucas.

The Incredible Journey

If you love and have a dog you will really go thru many emotions. A laughable movie but a few tearful moments too. This was one of Don Ameche's final movies before his death the year of the film's release.

I mentioned above that A Dog’s Way Homeis also a remake, because the theme of ‘pet crossing the country to get home’ has already been told a few times on the big screen. The 1963 live action Disney film The Incredible Journey features a bull terrier, a lab mix, and a Siamese cat who band together to cross a vast distance and help each other through many dangers…and it’s still the film to beat. The plot line is very simple, you can pretty much figure out the whole storyline by just reading the scene index on the DVD liner, and the acting is very basic. But where the movie truly shines is through local color and cinematography. The sweeping views of the Pacific Northwest shoreline, lush green forests, and amazing wilderness makes a viewer almost be able to breath in the fresh air.

My 4.5 yo daughter wanted to watch this since we just got a puppy. My sensitive 8 yo son cried throughout, and we all thought the situations the main character, a rescued dog named Bella, went through, we’re horrible. We pushed through to show them that everything ended up ok, but it was tough.

Based on the beloved bestselling novel, A Dog’s Way Home chronicles the heartwarming adventure of Bella , a devoted dog who embarks on an epic 400-mile journey home after she is separated from her beloved human.

Die unglaublichen Abenteuer von Bella

But when animal control deems Bella dangerous (because she's part pit) and threatens euthanasia, Lucas teaches her a game called "Go Home" in which she races back to their house. After Lucas is forced to place Bella in the temporary care of Olivia's aunt and uncle in New Mexico, Bella believes she must play "Go Home" and begins her long, perilous journey home. Parents need to know that A Dog's Way Home, like 2017's A Dog's Purpose, is based on one of author W.

In this case, the central canine is Bella , who embarks upon a perilous 400-mile, two-plus-year journey to get back to her human companion after an unexpected separation. Expect a little bit of very mild language ("hell," "stupid," "moron"), some background drinking, and a bit of affection between both opposite-sex and same-sex couples. What both current movies have in common — besides, you know, dogs — is a desire to make their audiences cry.

Filming began in Vancouver, British Columbia on October 16, 2017, lasting through December 15. It was released in the United States on January 11, 2019, to mixed reviews from critics and grossed $80 million worldwide. It went on to have a debut of $11.3 million, finishing third at the box office, behind The Upside and holdover Aquaman. In its second weekend the film made $7.1 million, finishing sixth. "Far From Home, the Adventures of Yellowdog" is a very simple film, very much suitable to family viewing. And in this day and age, with bathroom humor and violence very common in family films, it's very nice to see a movie which can hold interest without all that. Vengeful, Günter notifies animal control that Bella is a pitbull , because, in Denver, Pitbulls are illegal, due to being a dangerous breed. That evening, an overzealous animal control officer named Chuck comes by to warn Lucas that if he finds Bella on the street, he will impound her.

So if that doesn’t sound like a fun time, neither of these films are for you. Cameron is like Nicholas Sparks, but for pet stories; his crowd-pleasing, tearjerking work focuses on the powerful love between humans and their dogs. And while dog-loving families will be happy to note that, unlike in A Dog's Purpose, there's no death scene involving the central canine in A Dog's Way Home, there definitely is an emotional, intense story arc that's likely to leave them in tears.

Bella ends up attached to homeless veteran who chains her to him and then dies. It's particularly upsetting because Bella describes keeping him warm until there's "no more" him; she's chained to dead body. Bella is struck by car, looks like she has a leg injury. The three men give Bella food at their campsite and upon learning who her owner is, try to call Lucas, only to be scared away by the sudden arrival of Big Kitten. During the winter, Bella helps rescue a man buried in an avalanche. Eventually, she reaches a small town, where she is taken in by a homeless veteran named Axel until he soon dies.

These are disturbing threats, not like Homeward Bound which he loves. So if your kid is sensitive especially about animal abuse, I would definitely avoid. However, Bella misses Lucas and leaves Farmington and begins a 400-mile journey home, which will take more than two years to complete.

The Woman in the Window

Despite the opening titles before the prologue and the first half of the closing credits is displayed via fading, the movie's title, shown after the prologue, is zooming slightly forward. The dog that plays the adult version of Bella is named Shelby The Dog and she was a rescue dog. She was found living in a junkyard in Tennessee.
